In May this year, South Africa's Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Bernice Swarts, officially launched the Presidential One Billion Trees Programme at the South African National Biodiversity Institute's Pretoria National Botanical Garden, calling on all citizens in the country to join a nationwide effort to plant trees and build a greener, healthier country.

The Presidential One Billion Trees Programme seeks to mobilise all sectors of society - government, business, labour, civil society, faith-based organisations, traditional leaders, diplomatic missions, youth formations and communities - to plant trees as part of a collective response to climate change.

To tell us more about this initiative, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Bernice Swarts joins us now in studio.

One Billion Trees to Combat Climate Change

Today marks the final day of the three-day extraordinary summit of troop-contributing countries to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in Kampala, Uganda.

AUSSOM, which became operational in January 2025, is mandated to support Somalia's efforts to weaken the militant group Al-Shabaab, protect civilians, and create conditions for the gradual handover of security responsibilities to Somali security forces.

However, the summit comes amid growing concerns about the mission's future funding, as the United States informed the African Union that it will end its financial support for AUSSOM on 31 December.

For more on this, we are joined on the line by Professor Thomas Mandrup, Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Defence College and Stellenbosch University.

Civil society groups in Zimbabwe had planned to stage anti-government protests today, but the demonstrations now appear unlikely to go ahead following a heavy security deployment and repeated warnings from authorities.

Provincial ministers, senior police officials and the military have warned that anyone taking part in the July 31 protests would face arrest.

The demonstrations, organised by activists through social media, were intended to oppose recently passed constitutional amendments that would extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term in office by two years, from 2028 to 2030, and replace direct presidential elections with the election of the president by Parliament.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), in collaboration with the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), is holding a media briefing today at Freedom Park in Pretoria.

The briefing will provide an update on the second phase of the 2026/27 Repatriation and Restitution of Human Remains and Heritage Objects Plan, with Angola serving as the immediate focus under the Resistance and Liberation Heritage Route (RLHR) Programme.

Feature: Cultural Spotlight

Poetry has long been one of Africa's oldest and most powerful forms of storytelling.

It has given voice to joy and grief, resistance and hope, and today it continues to create spaces for conversations that are often difficult to have.

One initiative using the spoken word to tackle an important social issue is Kushaya: Monthly Poetry Nights for Men.

Taking place today in Harare, Zimbabwe, under the theme My Brother's Keeper: Breaking the Silence of Men, the event brings together male poets and performers to explore masculinity, vulnerability and mental wellbeing through poetry.

While the stage features an all-male line-up, the invitation is open to everyone, recognising that creating healthier conversations around men's mental health is a responsibility shared by the whole community.

We explore how poetry serves as a catalyst for healing, dialogue and
social change.
