Over 50 survivors of conflict-related sexual violence have met in Juba to demand answers, two years after they filed the first ever war crimes case in the world's youngest country's history.

As the country marked the second anniversary of South Sudan's National Remembrance Day on Wednesday, to call for accountability.

The survivors were joined by religious leaders, government officials, and civil society members to renew their call for accountability, nearly a decade after they were subjected to violence.

War Crime Survivors Unite to Demand Justice in Juba

Police in Kenya have closed off key roads leading into the capital, Nairobi, ahead of planned nationwide protests marking two years since the deadly anti-government demonstrations of June 2024.

The protests, which were sparked by proposed tax hikes, culminated in the storming of parliament and forced the government to withdraw the controversial Finance Bill.

More than 80 people were killed, and dozens were injured during the unrest, making it one of the deadliest periods of civil protest in the country's recent history.

Can Youth-Led Solutions Secure Africa’s Water Future?

South Africa continues to face a growing mental health challenge, particularly among young people. Yet despite increasing awareness, many young men still struggle to speak openly about anxiety, depression, loneliness and the pressures of navigating identity, relationships and expectations of masculinity. For many, seeking help remains difficult, with stigma and harmful social norms continuing to discourage vulnerability.

As institutions of higher learning grapple with student wellbeing, questions are being asked about whether universities should be doing more than simply providing counselling services. Could creating spaces where young men are encouraged to have honest, judgement-free conversations play a role in improving mental health outcomes? And what responsibility do universities have in reshaping ideas of masculinity for a new generation?

The University of Johannesburg is hoping to contribute to that conversation through the launch of the UJ Mancave Podcast, an initiative designed to give male students a platform to discuss the issues affecting their lives.

This year marks 50 years of The Market Theatre, one of South Africa’s most influential cultural institutions and a powerful platform for storytelling, artistic expression, and social change.

As part of its golden anniversary celebrations, one of its most iconic productions, Sarafina!, has returned to the stage in a historic reunion that brought together members of the original cast for the first time in 35 years. First performed at The Market Theatre in 1987, Sarafina! became much more than a musical. It captured the spirit, struggles, and resilience of South Africa’s youth during apartheid, giving voice to a generation fighting for freedom and justice.

The production went on to achieve international acclaim, captivating audiences around the world and showcasing South Africa’s extraordinary artistic talent. Its success led to a celebrated Broadway run and a film adaptation featuring renowned performers including Whoopi Goldberg, Leleti Khumalo, and Dr John Kani.

Joining us is Nhlanhla Ngema, acclaimed South African theatre director, performer, and creative producer, whose journey began in rural KwaZulu-Natal before becoming part of the original Sarafina! cast on both the Broadway stage and in the film adaptation.

In this conversation, we reflect on the significance of the Sarafina! reunion, the legacy of The Market Theatre, and the enduring power of a production that continues to inspire audiences nearly four decades after its debut. We also explore Nhlanhla Ngema’s contribution to South African theatre and the role of the arts in preserving history, identity, and collective memory.
